Compare Fractions with Models: what children learn
Two bars of the same length show which fraction is greater by how much of each bar is shaded. Models help children reason about size when the denominators or numerators match.
Compare Fractions with Models: worked example
3/8 __ 5/8 (The top bar shows 3 of 8 parts shaded. The bottom bar shows 5 of 8.) <
The bottom bar has more shaded, so 5/8 is the greater fraction. 3/8 is less than 5/8.
Compare Fractions with Models: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes compare only the number of shaded parts when the bars are cut into different sized parts.
Compare Fractions with Models: how to help at home or in class
Draw pairs of equal-length bars and let your child shade each one, then lay a pencil across both bars to see which shading reaches further. Ask them to explain the result in a spoken sentence before writing the symbol, since the sign is easy to flip. Once they can say which fraction is greater from the bars alone, even when the parts are different sizes, they can try comparing from the numbers only.
