Equal Fractions with Models: what children learn
Two bars of the same length show why different fractions can be equal: the shaded amount is the same even when the parts are different sizes. The pictures give children a way to see equivalence before using rules.
Equal Fractions with Models: worked example
1/3 = __/6 (The top bar has 3 parts with 1 shaded. The bottom bar has 6 parts.) 2
The shaded part of the bottom bar covers the same amount as the top bar. That is 2 of the 6 parts.
Equal Fractions with Models: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes say two fractions are equal because they have the same top number, like 1/3 and 1/6.
Equal Fractions with Models: how to help at home or in class
Draw two identical bars, one above the other, and use a ruler to cut them into different numbers of parts. Shade the top bar, then have your child shade the bottom one to exactly the same length before reading both fractions. Ask them to predict a match before drawing, for example with thirds and sixths. When they correctly sort pairs into equal and not equal, they are ready to compare fractions by size.
