Fractions on a Number Line: what children learn

On a number line the distance from 0 to 1 is cut into equal parts, and each part is a unit fraction. A point that is 3 parts from 0 on a line cut into fourths is at 3/4.

Fractions on a Number Line: worked example

A number line from 0 to 1 is cut into 4 equal parts. The point is 3 parts from 0. What fraction is the point? 3/4

There are 4 equal parts from 0 to 1, so the bottom number is 4. The point is 3 parts from 0, so the top number is 3.

Fractions on a Number Line: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes count the tick marks instead of the parts between them, so they are off by one.

Fractions on a Number Line: how to help at home or in class

Mark 0 and 1 at the two ends of a hallway or a long strip of paper, and space marks evenly between them for fourths. Your child hops from 0 and calls out the fraction after each hop. Then you name a fraction and they walk to it. Count the gaps they hop over, not the marks they land on. Once this works with several denominators, extend the line past 1.
