Multiplication — Missing Factor: what children learn
A missing-factor problem asks which number makes the fact true. If a number times 6 is 42, the number is 7 because 7 × 6 = 42, and division finds it too: 42 ÷ 6 = 7.
Multiplication — Missing Factor: worked example
__ × 6 = 42 7
7 × 6 = 42, so the missing number is 7.
Multiplication — Missing Factor: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes divide the wrong way or add instead of finding the matching fact.
Multiplication — Missing Factor: how to help at home or in class
Write a complete fact on paper, such as 6 × 7 = 42, then cover one number with a sticky note and ask what is hidden. Move the note to each of the three spots in turn. Your child sees that the product is the whole and the factors are the parts. When the answer comes by asking what times six makes forty-two, rather than guessing, move on to the same idea with tens.
