Multiply by 8 and 9: what children learn

The 8s facts are double the 4s facts, so 8 × 6 = 48 because 4 × 6 = 24 and 24 + 24 = 48. In the 9s facts the digits of the product add up to 9, as in 9 × 7 = 63 and 6 + 3 = 9.

Multiply by 8 and 9: worked example

9 × 6 = 54

9 × 6 = 54, and the digits add up to 9 because 5 + 4 = 9.

Multiply by 8 and 9: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes mix up 8 × 7 = 56 and 8 × 8 = 64.

Multiply by 8 and 9: how to help at home or in class

The 9s have a finger trick. Hold up ten fingers and fold down the one that matches the number being multiplied by 9. For 9 × 4, fold the fourth finger: three fingers sit to its left and six to its right, so the answer is 36. For the 8s, count spider legs or octopus arms in pictures. When the 9s are quick and the 8s no longer need counting, mixing every table makes sense.
