Multiply by 4 and 5: what children learn
The 4s facts are double the 2s facts (4 × 6 = 24 because 2 × 6 = 12 and 12 + 12 = 24), and the 5s facts always end in 0 or 5.
Multiply by 4 and 5: worked example
5 × 7 = 35
Count by 5s seven times: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35. So 5 × 7 = 35.
Multiply by 4 and 5: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes count by the wrong number and land on 28 instead of 35.
Multiply by 4 and 5: how to help at home or in class
Use an analog clock for the 5s: each number on the face is five minutes further on, so reading minutes counts by 5s all the way around. For the 4s, play double-double, where you call a number and your child doubles it and doubles it again. Mix the two in a quick call and response over a few days. When both feel automatic, tackle the trickier 6s and 7s.
