Distributive Property: what children learn
The distributive property lets children split a hard fact into two easier ones, such as 7 groups of 8 into 7 groups of 4 and 7 groups of 4. The two smaller products are then added.
Distributive Property: worked example
6 × 7 = 6 × 5 + 6 × ? 2
Split 7 into 5 and 2. 6 × 5 = 30 and 6 × 2 = 12, and 30 + 12 = 42. That matches 6 groups of 7.
Distributive Property: a common mistake to watch for
Kids often multiply only one part, or forget that the two parts must add up to the original factor.
Distributive Property: how to help at home or in class
On squared paper, draw an 8 by 6 rectangle and cut it with a line after the fifth column, leaving 8 by 5 and 8 by 1. Colour each part, find each product, and add them, getting 40 and 8, then 48. Let your child try other cuts on the same rectangle. When your child picks easy splits, like 5s, without help, the skill is ready for larger numbers.
