Order of Operations: All Four Operations: what children learn
Longer problems mix all four operations. Children first do every multiplication and division from left to right, then every addition and subtraction from left to right.
Order of Operations: All Four Operations: worked example
20 - 12 ÷ 4 + 5 = ? 22
Divide first: 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Then work from left to right: 20 - 3 = 17 and 17 + 5 = 22.
Order of Operations: All Four Operations: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes do all the adding and subtracting first because those signs come first in the problem.
Order of Operations: All Four Operations: how to help at home or in class
Use two highlighters. On the first pass, highlight every multiplication and division and solve those pieces, rewriting the problem with the answers in place. On the second pass, work the addition and subtraction left to right on a fresh line. Each line should be shorter than the one before. When neat rewrites become routine and your child needs no reminders, the properties of multiplication are a good next step.
