Multiplication Properties: what children learn
The commutative property says that factors can be swapped, so 4 times 7 is the same as 7 times 4. The associative property says that the grouping of three factors can change without changing the product.
Multiplication Properties: worked example
4 × 7 = 7 × __ 4
The order of the factors can change. 4 × 7 = 28 and 7 × 4 = 28, so the missing number is 4.
Multiplication Properties: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes copy the number next to the blank instead of finding the factor that is missing.
Multiplication Properties: how to help at home or in class
Build with counters or small blocks. Make a 4 by 7 array, then turn it a quarter turn to see that the same counters now make 7 by 4. For grouping, stack unit cubes into a 2 by 3 layer and make four layers, then change which two numbers get multiplied first. The total never changes. When your child explains why, splitting a larger factor into parts is the next idea.
