Rounding to the Nearest 100: what children learn

To round to the nearest 100, children find the two hundreds a number is between and decide which is closer. They look only at the tens digit, and a number that ends in 50 rounds up.

Rounding to the Nearest 100: worked example

Round 462 to the nearest 100: 500

462 is between 400 and 500. The tens digit is 6, which is 5 or more, so round up to 500.

Rounding to the Nearest 100: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes look at the ones digit instead of the tens digit, so they round 449 up to 500.

Rounding to the Nearest 100: how to help at home or in class

Money gives rounding a purpose. A price of 348 cents is just under 350, so it sits closer to 300 than to 400, and the price tag reads about three dollars. Choose prices on shop labels, change them to cents and ask for the nearest whole dollar, since a dollar is 100 cents. When your child decides quickly which hundred is closer, rounding to either a ten or a hundred comes next.
