Rounding to the Nearest 10 or 100: how to help at home or in class
Before rounding, teach a two-mark habit: underline the digit in the place being rounded, then circle its neighbour to the right. Flip a coin to choose tens or hundreds for each number, and round the same number both ways sometimes, such as 276, which becomes 280 to the nearest ten and 300 to the nearest hundred. When the underline and circle steps happen automatically, estimating sums is a natural use.
