Rounding to the Nearest 10: what children learn
Third graders round whole numbers to the nearest 10 by finding the two tens a number sits between and choosing the closer one. A number that ends in 5 is exactly halfway, and the rule is to round it up.
Rounding to the Nearest 10: worked example
Round 67 to the nearest 10: 70
67 is between 60 and 70. The ones digit is 7, which is 5 or more, so round up to 70.
Rounding to the Nearest 10: a common mistake to watch for
Kids often round a number that ends in 5 down, such as 45 to 40, instead of up to 50.
Rounding to the Nearest 10: how to help at home or in class
Sketch a number line from 40 to 50 with a mark at the midpoint, 45. Place dots for numbers like 43, 47 and 45 and let your child decide which ten each dot is nearer to by looking at the line. Then try a different pair of tens, such as 70 and 80. When the answers come without the picture, rounding to the nearest 100 uses the same idea one place to the left.
