Division Word Problems: what children learn
Division stories either share a total into equal groups or ask how many groups of a given size can be made. Students connect each story to a multiplication fact with an unknown factor.
Division Word Problems: worked example
Ben shares 24 stickers equally among 4 friends. How many stickers does each one get? 6
Share 24 into 4 equal groups. 24 ÷ 4 = 6, so each friend gets 6 stickers.
Division Word Problems: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes divide the smaller number by the bigger one, or multiply, instead of splitting the total into equal parts.
Division Word Problems: how to help at home or in class
Hand your child a pile of 20 buttons and read a story about sharing them among 4 friends. They deal the buttons one at a time into groups, like dealing cards. Then try a different story about making groups of 5 and ask how many groups appear. Notice together that both are division, but the question differs. When each kind feels natural, they can mix multiplication and division stories.
