Multiplication Word Problems: what children learn
Third graders solve stories about equal groups, arrays, and "times as many" using multiplication facts within 100. Drawing the groups or an array helps them see that the story means the number of groups times the number in each group.
Multiplication Word Problems: worked example
Mia has 4 bags. Each bag has 6 apples. How many apples does Mia have in all? 24
There are 4 equal groups of 6. 4 × 6 = 24, so Mia has 24 apples.
Multiplication Word Problems: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes add the two numbers they see instead of multiplying the number of groups by the number in each group.
Multiplication Word Problems: how to help at home or in class
Act the story out with small objects: line up cups to be the groups and put the same number of beans in each. Before writing any number sentence, ask your child to retell the story as a number of groups with a number in each. Then invent a story together about a shop or a garden. Once they set up the picture first and choose the right sentence, they can move on to division stories.
