Children sometimes forget that both lengths must be in the same unit before they add or subtract them.

Cut two strips of paper, one 9 inches and one 6 inches, using a ruler. Tape them end to end with no overlap and measure the whole strip: 15 inches. Then cut a piece off and measure what is left. Make your child say the unit with every answer. When your child writes the unit without being reminded, money stories are next.
