Perimeter and Area Word Problems: what children learn

Students find the distance around a shape (the perimeter) by adding its sides, and the area of a rectangle by multiplying length by width. They also find a missing side from the distance around or the area.

Perimeter and Area Word Problems: worked example

A rectangle is 8 feet long and 5 feet wide. What is its area in square feet? 40

Area is length times width. 8 × 5 = 40, so the area is 40 square feet.

Perimeter and Area Word Problems: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often mix up the two ideas and add the sides when the story asks for area, or multiply when it asks for the distance around.

Perimeter and Area Word Problems: how to help at home or in class

Draw a rectangle on graph paper. Trace your finger along the edge and count the units to find the distance around, then fill in the squares inside to find the area. Do both for the same rectangle and ask which answer needs the word square. Once your child names what a story asks before computing, they are ready to hunt for missing sides.
