Add 3-Digit Numbers — Missing Addend: how to help at home or in class
Draw a fact-family triangle with the total at the top and the two parts at the bottom corners. Cover one part with a sticky note and ask your child to write all four number sentences the triangle gives, two additions and two subtractions. Then pick the one with the blank solved as a subtraction. Use totals such as 640 and a known part such as 285. When they can fill any triangle quickly, they are ready for subtraction in columns.
