Color Equal Shares: what children learn
Coloring one half, one third, or one fourth links the word to the picture: one share out of the equal shares that make the whole. Kids say the parts in words, never as numbers over numbers.
Color Equal Shares: worked example
Color one third of the shape. (The shape is split into 3 equal parts) one third
Color just 1 of the 3 equal parts.
Color Equal Shares: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes color every part, or color the wrong number of parts.
Color Equal Shares: how to help at home or in class
Draw a row of identical rectangles on paper, split each one into a different number of equal parts, and give a color command such as color one fourth. Then ask what is left uncolored, and have your child say it in words: three fourths. Switch roles and give you the commands. When your child colors the right share every time, the same ideas return with larger numbers.
