Sides and Vertices: what children learn

A vertex is a corner where two sides meet, so a shape has as many vertices as sides. Knowing this helps kids sort and name shapes quickly.

Sides and Vertices: worked example

How many vertices does a hexagon have? 6

A hexagon has 6 sides and 6 corners, so it has 6 vertices.

Sides and Vertices: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes count the sides but skip a corner, or count one corner twice.

Sides and Vertices: how to help at home or in class

Build shapes from straws or toothpicks, pressing a ball of clay at each corner. Count the clay balls, then count the straws, and notice the two numbers match. Take one straw away and ask what happened to the shape. When your child gives the number of corners from the number of sides without counting twice, try clue puzzles that ask for the shape name.
