Shapes and Their Attributes: what children learn
Using attributes such as the number of sides and vertices helps children describe shapes with math words. Each clue fits only one of the three shapes listed.
Shapes and Their Attributes: worked example
Which shape has 5 sides: circle, hexagon, or pentagon? pentagon
A pentagon has 5 sides. A hexagon has 6 sides and a circle has none.
Shapes and Their Attributes: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes pick a shape because it looks familiar, without counting the sides.
Shapes and Their Attributes: how to help at home or in class
Play a guessing game: hide a shape card and give one clue at a time, such as I have more than four sides, then I have fewer than seven. Your child guesses after each clue, then swaps roles and writes clues for you. When your child can write two clues that point to exactly one shape, rows and columns of squares make a good next step.
