Shapes are named by their sides and corners: triangles have 3 sides, quadrilaterals 4, pentagons 5, and hexagons 6. Each question offers three names so that only one can fit.
Identify 2D Shapes: worked example
A shape has 5 straight sides. What is this shape: hexagon, pentagon, or circle? pentagon
A shape with 5 sides is a pentagon. A hexagon has 6 sides and a circle has none.

Kids often call every shape with 4 sides a square, even when the sides are not equal.
Identify 2D Shapes: how to help at home or in class
Cut several triangles, four-sided shapes, pentagons and hexagons from paper in different sizes, and tilt some on their sides. Ask your child to trace each outline with a finger, counting sides aloud, before naming it. Notice together that a shape keeps its name when it is turned or stretched. When your child names tilted shapes correctly, move on to talking about sides and vertices in detail.
