Divide by 2, 3, 4, and 5: what children learn
Every division fact comes from a multiplication fact: since 3 × 6 = 18, we know 18 ÷ 3 = 6, and since 5 × 7 = 35, we know 35 ÷ 5 = 7.
Divide by 2, 3, 4, and 5: worked example
35 ÷ 5 = 7
Ask: what times 5 makes 35? Since 5 × 7 = 35, 35 ÷ 5 = 7.
Divide by 2, 3, 4, and 5: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes subtract instead of dividing, or mix up the divisor and the answer.
Divide by 2, 3, 4, and 5: how to help at home or in class
Skip counting does the dividing. To work out 35 ÷ 5, count by 5s while raising one finger at each count, stopping at 35. The number of fingers up is the answer. For dividing by 2, talk about halving or sharing coins between two people, and for 4, halving twice. When your child answers quickly without raising fingers, the harder divisors of 6 to 9 are ready.
