Multiplication and Division Fact Families: what children learn

A fact family uses the same three numbers in multiplication and division. The numbers 3, 4, and 12 give 3 × 4 = 12, 4 × 3 = 12, 12 ÷ 3 = 4, and 12 ÷ 4 = 3.

Multiplication and Division Fact Families: worked example

Write the fact family for 3, 4, and 12. 3 × 4 = 12, 4 × 3 = 12, 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 12 ÷ 4 = 3

The two smaller numbers multiply to make the biggest number, and the biggest number divides by each of them.

Multiplication and Division Fact Families: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often write only one multiplication fact and one division fact.

Multiplication and Division Fact Families: how to help at home or in class

Cut a triangle from paper and write the biggest number at the top and the other two at the bottom corners. Cover one number with a finger and read out the fact that appears. Make triangles from facts your child knows, like 6, 7 and 42, and say all four facts each triangle gives. A good sign of readiness is spotting that a triangle with two equal numbers, such as 3, 3 and 9, gives only two facts.
