Division: Making Equal Groups: what children learn

Division can also mean finding how many groups: 20 stickers in groups of 4 makes 5 groups because 5 × 4 = 20.

Division: Making Equal Groups: worked example

How many groups of 4 can you make from 20 stickers? 5

20 ÷ 4 = 5, because 5 groups of 4 make 20.

Division: Making Equal Groups: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes answer with the size of each group instead of the number of groups.

Division: Making Equal Groups: how to help at home or in class

Put a pile of 20 counters on the table and ask how many groups of 4 can be made. Your child pulls out groups of 4 and counts the piles. For a number line version, hop backward by 4 from 20 and count the hops until reaching 0. Ask each time whether the question wants the size of a group or the number of groups. Once that is clear, division facts are the next stage.
