Unit Fractions: what children learn
A unit fraction such as 1/4 is one equal part of a whole cut into 4 parts. Every other fraction is built from unit fractions: 3/4 is made of three parts that are each 1/4.
Unit Fractions: worked example
1 of 4 equal parts = 1/4
One part of a whole cut into 4 equal parts is 1/4. The top number is 1 because we take 1 part.
Unit Fractions: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes think 1/8 is bigger than 1/2 because 8 is a bigger number than 2.
Unit Fractions: how to help at home or in class
Build a fraction wall from paper strips: one whole strip, then strips cut into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and eighths, with a 1 on top of every labeled piece. Lay the pieces on the whole and count how many it takes to cover it. Let your child put the pieces in order of size and explain the pattern. When they can build a fraction like 5/6 from five 1/6 pieces, they are ready for the number line.
