Repeated Addition to Multiplication: what children learn
Multiplication is a short way to write repeated addition: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 and 3 × 4 = 12 both tell how many in 3 groups of 4. The first factor counts the groups.
Repeated Addition to Multiplication: worked example
4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = __ × 4 4
The number 4 is added 4 times, so 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 4 × 4.
Repeated Addition to Multiplication: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes write the number being added instead of how many times it is added.
Repeated Addition to Multiplication: how to help at home or in class
Gather buttons or coins and have your child build 4 groups of 3, then write the addition sentence and the multiplication sentence side by side. Reverse it: call out 5 × 2 and ask for the matching repeated addition. The key phrase to practise aloud is groups of, so 6 × 3 reads as six groups of three. When that reading comes naturally, rows and columns in arrays are the next step.
