Counting by 3s: what children learn
Counting by 3s builds the base for the 3 times table. The lists here sometimes start on a number that is not a multiple of 3, so children must use the jump of 3 and not memory.
Counting by 3s: worked example
14, 17, __, 23, 26 20
Each number is 3 more than the one before it. 17 + 3 = 20, and 20 + 3 = 23.
Counting by 3s: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes count by 2s or 4s by mistake, so checking the jump between two known numbers helps.
Counting by 3s: how to help at home or in class
Count with a rhythm: stomp on every number you say and whisper the beat between. Begin from 14 or another number that is not a multiple of 3, so your child has to keep the jump and cannot lean on memory. Write down the counted numbers as a list afterwards and check that every neighbouring pair is 3 apart. When starting anywhere works smoothly, counting by 4s is next.
