Counting by 8s and 9s: what children learn

Counting by 8s and 9s prepares children for the hardest facts in the times tables. Finding the jump from two known numbers keeps the work about the pattern, not about guessing.

Counting by 8s and 9s: worked example

27, 36, __, 54, 63 45

The jump is 9 each time. 36 + 9 = 45, and 45 + 9 = 54.

Counting by 8s and 9s: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often add 10 and then forget to take away 1 when counting by 9s.

Counting by 8s and 9s: how to help at home or in class

Shade a hundred chart. Counting by 9s makes a staircase that moves down one row and left one column each time, because 9 is one less than 10. Counting by 8s moves down one row and left two columns. Colour one pattern in each colour and ask your child to predict where the next shaded square will land before checking. When predictions are right, move on to naming a pattern rule.
