Counting by 4s: what children learn
Counting by 4s is the same as doubling and doubling again, and it leads to the 4 times table. Some lists start on a multiple of 4 and some do not, which keeps children looking at the jump.
Counting by 4s: worked example
25, 29, 33, __, 41 37
Each number is 4 more than the one before it. 33 + 4 = 37, and 37 + 4 = 41.
Counting by 4s: a common mistake to watch for
Kids often slip when a count crosses a hundred, such as going from 98 to 102.
Counting by 4s: how to help at home or in class
Count by 2s and say only every second number out loud while tapping the silent ones. That is counting by 4s. Then practise crossing a hundred on purpose by starting at 94: 94, 98, 102. Draw the jump on a number line with a bridge at 100 if needed. Smooth crossings and no slips mean the harder jumps of 6 and 7 are the next challenge.
