Counting by 6s and 7s: what children learn

Counting by 6s and 7s is harder than counting by 2s, 5s, or 10s, so children practice with a missing number in a short list. They first find the jump, then use it to fill the gap.

Counting by 6s and 7s: worked example

18, 24, 30, __, 42 36

The jump is 6 each time. 30 + 6 = 36, and 36 + 6 = 42.

Counting by 6s and 7s: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes mix up a jump of 6 with a jump of 7 and use the wrong one for the whole list.

Counting by 6s and 7s: how to help at home or in class

Write short number lists on index cards, each with one number missing, with some using a jump of 6 and some a jump of 7. Before filling any gap, your child sorts the cards into two stacks by finding the jump between two neighbours. Fill in the missing numbers afterwards and check by counting on from the start. Once sorting is instant, the jumps of 8 and 9 follow.
