Draw the Time — Half Hours: what children learn

Drawing a half-hour time means placing the minute hand exactly on the 6, then placing the hour hand halfway between its number and the next one — not directly on either.

Draw the Time — Half Hours: worked example

9:30 9:30

Point the minute hand straight at the 6, and point the hour hand halfway between the 9 and the 10.

Draw the Time — Half Hours: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often draw the hour hand pointing directly at the 9 instead of partway toward the 10 — reminding them the hour hand is always moving, never "parked," helps.

Draw the Time — Half Hours: how to help at home or in class

Name a time such as half past four, and ask your child to draw the long hand pointing down at the six. Then ask where the short hand belongs: slightly past the four, not yet at the five. Have your child check with a real clock or a toy clock, moving the long hand around slowly to watch the short hand creep forward. Alternate between whole and half hours. When both hands are in the right places for several times in a row, move on to shapes.
