Draw the Time — Whole Hours: what children learn
Drawing a whole-hour time runs the reading skill in reverse — the minute hand always points straight up at 12, and only the hour hand needs to be placed at the correct number.
Draw the Time — Whole Hours: worked example
7:00 7:00
Point the minute hand straight up at 12, and point the hour hand directly at the 7.
Draw the Time — Whole Hours: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes draw the hour hand pointing exactly between two numbers instead of right at one — on a whole hour, the hour hand should point directly at its number, not in between.
Draw the Time — Whole Hours: how to help at home or in class
Provide a blank clock face or a paper plate and a pencil. Name a time, such as nine o’clock, and have your child first draw the long hand straight up at twelve and then add a shorter hand pointing at the nine. Compare the result to a real clock on the wall. Switch roles and make mistakes on purpose for your child to catch. When your child draws both hands correctly every time, move on to half hours.
