Tell the Time — Half Hours: what children learn

On a half hour, the minute hand points at the 6 and the hour hand sits halfway between two numbers — reading it correctly means noticing the hour hand hasn't quite reached the next hour yet.

Tell the Time — Half Hours: worked example

The clock shows the hour hand halfway between 4 and 5, and the minute hand on 6. 4:30

The minute hand on 6 means 30 minutes have passed, and the hour hand being between 4 and 5 means it's still "4-something" — so the time is 4:30.

Tell the Time — Half Hours: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often round the hour hand up to the next number since it's closer to it visually — remind them that the hour only changes once the minute hand reaches 12 again.

Tell the Time — Half Hours: how to help at home or in class

On a toy or paper-plate clock, show half past seven with the long hand on the six, and talk about what happens to the short hand: it sits partway between the seven and the eight. Practice with a few daily events, like half past six for dinner. Ask your child which hour it is just after, and notice the hour has not changed yet. When your child can read a mix of hours and half hours, try drawing them.
