Value of a Digit (3-Digit): what children learn
The same digit is worth different amounts in different places. Finding the value of a digit helps children see why 5 in 452 is worth 50, not 5.
Value of a Digit (3-Digit): worked example
In 582, what is the value of the 8? 80
The 8 is in the tens place, so its value is 8 tens, or 80.
Value of a Digit (3-Digit): a common mistake to watch for
Kids often write the digit (8) instead of its value (80).
Value of a Digit (3-Digit): how to help at home or in class
Play digit detective with a highlighter. Write 555 and ask for the value of each 5 in turn: 500, then 50, then 5. Then compare 372 with 727, asking what the 7 is worth in each, and ask your child to circle the place that decides it. When your child can explain in a sentence why one digit is worth different amounts, comparing with the symbols comes next.
