Number Names (3-Digit): what children learn
Children read and write three-digit numbers in words, using a hyphen for numbers like forty-seven. In US style the word "and" is left out of whole numbers.
Number Names (3-Digit): worked example
347 = three hundred forty-seven
The 3 is three hundred, the 4 is forty, and the 7 is seven. We do not write "and".
Number Names (3-Digit): a common mistake to watch for
Kids often add the word "and" (three hundred and forty-seven) or spell forty as "fourty".
Number Names (3-Digit): how to help at home or in class
Read three-digit numbers aloud from page numbers, receipts, or a pretend check, then have your child write the number in words on the check’s amount line. Post a small word bank on the fridge with the ones words, the teen words, and the tens words from twenty to ninety. When your child can name a number with a zero in the tens place, like 305, without peeking, comparing numbers is next.
