Missing Place Value (3-Digit): what children learn

Each digit in a three-digit number tells how many hundreds, tens, or ones there are. Finding the missing count shows that children can take a number apart by place.

Missing Place Value (3-Digit): worked example

347 = 3 hundreds + __ tens + 7 ones 4

The digit in the tens place of 347 is 4, so there are 4 tens.

Missing Place Value (3-Digit): a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes write the value of the digit (40) instead of how many tens there are (4).

Missing Place Value (3-Digit): how to help at home or in class

Write a number such as 582 on paper and cover one digit with a sticky note. Your child says how many hundreds, tens, or ones are hiding, then lifts the note to check. Swap roles so your child hides digits for you, and slip in a number with a zero, like 705. When answers come quickly and sound like a count of groups, expanded form is the natural next step.
