Expanded Form (3-Digit): what children learn
Expanded form writes a number as the sum of the value of each digit, such as 300 + 40 + 7. It shows children that every digit is worth more than its face value.
Expanded Form (3-Digit): worked example
528 = 500 + __ + 8 20
The tens digit of 528 is 2, so its value is 20. 500 + 20 + 8 = 528.
Expanded Form (3-Digit): a common mistake to watch for
Kids often write the digit alone (2) in the tens spot instead of its value (20).
Expanded Form (3-Digit): how to help at home or in class
Write the digits of a number on three index cards, such as 6, 2, and 9, then add zeros so the cards read 600, 20, and 9. Stack them so the zeros hide and the cards combine into 629, then pull them apart again. Your child sees why 629 equals 600 + 20 + 9. Ready for number names when your child also handles a zero in the middle, as in 408 = 400 + 8.
