Subtraction Word Problems (Within 1,000): what children learn
Children subtract three-digit numbers in stories about items given away, groups split in two, and pages left in a book. They regroup a ten or a hundred when a place does not have enough.
Subtraction Word Problems (Within 1,000): worked example
A book has 540 pages. Ben has read 275 pages. How many pages are left to read? 265
Take away the pages Ben read. 540 - 275 = 265, so 265 pages are left.
Subtraction Word Problems (Within 1,000): a common mistake to watch for
Children often subtract the smaller digit from the larger one in each place, even when the top digit is smaller.
Subtraction Word Problems (Within 1,000): how to help at home or in class
Show your child counting up on an open number line. To find how far 285 is from 500, hop from 285 to 300, which is 15, then from 300 to 500, which is 200, for a total of 215. Compare it with the written method and see if both agree. Choose whichever route feels easier. When your child gets the same answer both ways, two-step stories are a good next step.
