Children often stop after the first step and give that answer, so it helps to check that every number in the story was used.

Start with 30 blocks, add 14 more, then take away 9. Stop after the first step and ask your child to announce the new total, 44, before going on. Then subtract: 44 - 9 = 35. Write each step on its own sticky note. When your child pauses on their own to name the middle answer, length stories are the next step.
