Tell short stories with a mystery and write them with a box. For instance, say you had some apples, ate 6, and now have 9. Your child writes box - 6 = 9, then works backward: 9 + 6 = 15. Let your child tell a mystery story back to you. When your child can write the box sentence before solving anything, comparison stories will feel much easier.
