Children may add the number of groups to the number in each group, such as 4 + 5, instead of adding 5 four times.
Equal Groups Word Problems: how to help at home or in class
Use a muffin tin and some raisins. Put 3 raisins into each of 4 cups, then count by 3s while pointing to each cup: 3, 6, 9, 12. Write the repeated addition as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. Then change to 5 cups of 2. When your child writes the repeated addition without help, this sets up multiplication in third grade.
