Area and Perimeter of Rectangles: what children learn

Perimeter adds the sides to measure the distance around a rectangle, while area multiplies length and width to count the squares inside. Each question asks for just one of them.

Area and Perimeter of Rectangles: worked example

A rectangle is 5 units long and 2 units wide. What is the area in square units? 10

Area is length times width: 5 × 2 = 10. The perimeter would be a different number, so read the question first.

Area and Perimeter of Rectangles: a common mistake to watch for

Kids often mix up the two ideas and add the sides when the question asks for the area, or multiply when it asks for the perimeter.

Area and Perimeter of Rectangles: how to help at home or in class

Build a 3 by 4 rectangle from 12 square tiles, count the tiles for area, and count the edge units for perimeter. Then rearrange the same 12 tiles into 2 by 6. The area stays 12, but the perimeter changes from 14 to 16. Have your child underline the key word in each question before answering. When the right measure is chosen every time, mixed practice is solid.
