Area: Find the Missing Side: what children learn

Since area = length × width, a missing side can be found by dividing the area by the known side, or by asking which number times the known side gives the area. These pictures are not drawn to scale.

Area: Find the Missing Side: worked example

The area is 18 square units. One side is 3 units. What is the missing side? 6

Think 3 × __ = 18. Since 3 × 6 = 18, the missing side is 6 units.

Area: Find the Missing Side: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes subtract the known side from the area instead of dividing.

Area: Find the Missing Side: how to help at home or in class

Give your child 24 square tiles and ask for every rectangle that can be made with all of them: 1 by 24, 2 by 12, 3 by 8 and 4 by 6. Then say one side is 3 and ask how many rows of 8 would be needed, or build it to find out. When your child links the missing side to a multiplication fact, mixed area and perimeter questions are next.
