Area on a Grid: what children learn
On a grid, each square is 1 square unit, so the area of an outlined shape is the number of squares inside it. Counting row by row or column by column keeps the count accurate.
Area on a Grid: worked example
A shape on a grid covers 2 rows of 5 squares. What is the area in square units? 10
Each row has 5 squares and there are 2 rows. 5 + 5 = 10, so the area is 10 square units.
Area on a Grid: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes count the grid lines or the squares around the outside instead of the squares inside.
Area on a Grid: how to help at home or in class
Draw an L-shaped figure on grid paper, then draw one line to split it into two rectangles. Count each part separately and add the two counts, then recount a different way, such as column by column, to confirm. When your child gets the same total by different routes, try shapes with trickier outlines before the next step.
