Belong or Not Belong: what children learn
Here the shapes in a row come in mixed colors, and the child has to group them by shape while ignoring color — deciding what belongs to a group is an early step toward sorting and classifying. (In "Same or Different" every shape matches exactly except one.)
Belong or Not Belong: worked example
A row of red and blue circles, and the 2nd one is a blue square. 2nd
Every shape is a circle except the 2nd one, which is a square — so the 2nd shape doesn't belong. Its color doesn't matter: other shapes are blue too.
Belong or Not Belong: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes pick a shape just because its color stands out — reminding them that only the shape decides what belongs here helps.
Belong or Not Belong: how to help at home or in class
Show a group of objects that share one trait, like all round or all with wheels, and add one that does not fit. Ask your child to say the rule that fits the group, and then choose the one that breaks it. Let your child secretly pick a rule and see if you can guess it. Try rules like color, shape or use. When your child can both state a rule and find the item that does not fit, move on to sorting.
