Sort and Count: what children learn
This extends sorting to BOTH categories at once — every shape in the row belongs to one of two groups, so the two counts always add up to the total number of shapes.
Sort and Count: worked example
A row has 4 circles and 3 squares, mixed together. 4 circles, 3 squares
Sorting the mixed row into two groups and counting each one separately gives 4 circles and 3 squares.
Sort and Count: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes lose track of which shapes they've already counted when sorting two groups at once — counting one shape type fully before starting the other helps.
Sort and Count: how to help at home or in class
Mix a handful of two or three kinds of objects, such as coins, buttons or toy animals. Ask your child to sort them onto labeled mats and write how many are in each group. Then ask comparison questions, like which group has the most and how many more. Counting each pile twice shows whether the answer matches. When your child can sort and count several kinds correctly, try tally marks to record the results.
