Same or Different: what children learn
Spotting what's different in a row of otherwise-identical shapes means comparing every item against the group pattern — the same skill used later for finding outliers in data. The odd one is always a different shape (sometimes a different color too), so no child has to tell colors apart.
Same or Different: worked example
Four blue circles in a row, and the 3rd one is a blue triangle. 3rd
Every shape is a blue circle except the 3rd one, which is a blue triangle — so the 3rd position is the one that's different.
Same or Different: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes scan too quickly and pick the wrong position — checking left to right one shape at a time avoids skipping over the odd one.
Same or Different: how to help at home or in class
Make a row of four or five objects, with one that does not match, such as four red cubes and one blue block, or four spoons and one fork. Have your child point to the odd one and tell you how it is different. Then change what makes it different: size, shape or color. Take turns making puzzles for each other. When your child spots the odd one in different types of puzzle, try deciding what belongs in a group.
