Tally Marks: what children learn
Tally marks group counts into bundles of 5 (four lines plus one diagonal crossing them) — reading them means counting by 5s for every full group, then adding any leftover single marks.
Tally Marks: worked example
One full group of 5 tally marks, plus 2 more single marks. 7
A full group of 5 plus 2 leftover marks makes 5 + 2 = 7.
Tally Marks: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes count every individual line one at a time instead of counting by 5s for each full group — practicing "5, 10, 15..." for the groups first speeds this up.
Tally Marks: how to help at home or in class
Make a tally chart while you watch for something, such as red cars passing the window or the number of times a ball bounces. Draw a line for each one, with the fifth line drawn across the previous four to close each group. Afterwards, count by fives and then add the remaining lines. Let your child do the counting. When your child counts groups of five fluently and reads the total without recounting lines, move on to tally sheets.
