Sorting: what children learn

Sorting means mentally separating a mixed group into categories before counting just one of them — an early data-handling skill that leads directly into tally marks and bar charts.

Sorting: worked example

A row has 3 circles, 2 squares, and 2 triangles. How many circles are there? 3

Picking out only the circles and counting them gives 3.

Sorting: a common mistake to watch for

Kids sometimes count every shape instead of just the target type — circling or pointing to only the matching shapes first helps avoid overcounting.

Sorting: how to help at home or in class

Pour a bowl of mixed buttons, blocks or pasta shapes onto the table and ask your child to sort them into piles. Ask how they decided and then sort again a different way. Count how many are in each pile and compare which has more. Using paper plates for categories keeps the piles tidy. When your child can sort by a rule you give them and by one they choose, try sorting and counting at the same time.
