Tally Sheets: what children learn
Drawing tally marks runs the reading skill in reverse — building groups of 5 (four lines, then a diagonal crossing them) until the full number is represented.
Tally Sheets: worked example
Draw 8 as tally marks. 8
One full group of 5 (four lines plus a diagonal), plus 3 more single lines, represents 8.
Tally Sheets: a common mistake to watch for
Kids sometimes draw 5 single lines without the diagonal "crossing" stroke for a full group — the diagonal is what makes a group of 5 quick to count at a glance.
Tally Sheets: how to help at home or in class
Pick a question for a simple family survey, such as favorite fruit, and write each choice down the side of a sheet of paper. Ask everyone to vote and let your child record each answer as a tally mark. Then count each row and decide which choice won and by how many votes. Ask your child to write one sentence about the results. When your child can make and read a tally table, you can move on to other graphs.
